Baron Samedi Boogie by NibbleKat Baron Samedi Boogie by NibbleKat
Baron Samedi-- Baron Samedi stands at the crossroads, where the souls of dead humans pass on their way to Guinee. He is a sexual loa, frequently represented by phallic symbols and he noted for disruption, obscenity, debauchery, and having a particular fondness for tobacco and rum. Additionally, he is the loa of sex and resurrection, and in the latter capacity he is often called upon for healing by those near or approaching death, as it is only Baron who can accept an individual into the realm of the dead. He is considered a wise judge, and a powerful magician.

And he's going to be in my comic, Vox Angelus.

...if I ever finish it. HAR.

The paper was too big for my scanner, so the left of it got cut off a tiny bit, which makes it look uneven... just imagine a little strip of white there, with his hat not being chopped off, okay? Okay!! WOOHOO.

And this is ink, with watered down acrylics!

Man... He reminds me of a book I read as a kid... The Halloween Tree? That might be what it's called, but he reminds me of the antagonist of the story, how I pictured him at least. Enough with the nostalgia though, I love it.

I had to google it, but yes! He reminds me of how I pictured the guy who told them that they had to give up a year of their lives to save Pipkin. (Was that the kids name?) I haven't read it in years, but it made me think of it right away. I looked through your gallery, and I really like your art! Don't ever stop, angels will cry.

I haven't read that one in years, either. I wouldn't doubt it if Bradbury didn't base that character on Samedi or someone similar... I do lovvveee Bradbury!

And thank you so much again for the compliment. ^_^

I forgot to leave a comment when I faved this earlier. I absolutely love the way you captured him. The details in the smoke, the crossroads in the distance, even the Ace of Spades in his hat. Perfection!!

Great depiction, hon. Then again, you always seem to capture the persona of particular deities very well.

Tired, more reclusive on the farm, but okay. Hanging in there. I need to see your new place. You need to see mine.

You could do some spiritual/deeper stuff on the river, if you wanted.

That would be lovely. I've recently gotten into cookig Indian cuisine. When you come over to my place, I'll have to make curry for you (and no, I don't use the already made curry paste ;-) ).

Silly question, why is one of his lenses broken?

I once heard a Voudon (his chice of spelling, not mine) practitioner describe Baron as 'the Inapproriate drunk uncle with no 'off-switch' at every family get-together.

HAHAHAHA. Yeah, he is. Seriously. Wiki him. And Voodoun's got a shit ton of spellings.

His sunglasses are missing one lens to signify that he's not of this world and not of the next, but kind of stuck in between or able to travel them both... and with the lens that's out, he can see the afterlife. With the lens that's in, he sees this world.

You are fantastic with watercolors. Ive never really been able to grasp them. Not to mention I really dig your interpretation of him. The details are so well done! =)

The baron is my personal favorite of all the loa; great job illustrating him. It's an interesting interpretation you have here. :)

He's hard not to like, really. I couldn't do the white top hat, though... it just looked way too weird.
