Angel of the Annunciation

Here's the finished product. When I started this, I hadn't planned for it to be anything but an icon of a random person, really. Then the wings popped out and I decided to take the breasts off and make it male.

It wasn't until I was trying to decide what the angel's left hand would be holding that I chose this to be Gabriel, the one who came to Mary to tell her she was having a divine baby.

...weirdly enough, I also didn't realize until about half an hour before finishing it that Gabriel is often depicted/thought of as the most androgynous and sometimes female of the angels noted in canon texts, though I have depicted him as male... and that he's associated with peacock feathers-- one of which I was staring at for reference for the colors here. Wah. Weird.

Anyway. GEARS! They're real watch gears. And are very aggravating, but there you are.
